Have you heard of thermostat or smart wifi thermostat and want to know more?
You’re in the right place! You can start by watching this video to understand how they work.
It has been a few months since my wife convinced me to buy one, and I must say that the experience has been very satisfying for the moment.
The cost is low, especially for the most basic models, installation and use are extremely simple, you can program the boiler to be turned on as you like and adjust settings wherever you are thanks to your smartphone.

Guide to programmable thermostats
The WiFi thermostat automatically connects to the home wireless internet system and allows you to remotely configure your home’s heating, thus optimizing consumption.
Smart thermostats are becoming part of the standard equipment of the technological houses of the new millennium. So if you are considering upgrading your thermostat for a more high-tech version, this guide contains everything you need to know to take the big step.
If you live in a harsh climate, especially in the deep north of Italy like me, you absolutely need a wi-fi thermostat to keep the home environment intelligently heated while you’re out.
The smart part of these devices is that they allow you to understand when you are at home and learn your habits to be able to calculate independently without your direct intervention (or if you prefer you can decide for yourself) the best heat yield in order to optimize consumption and avoid unnecessary energy waste.
An innovative ecological and economic way to manage your heating.
Learning is continuous and there is no need to reprogram it if you change habits, the thermostat will adapt itself to your new behavior pattern.
Some thermostats are equipped with an impressive « geofence » mode that allows you to track the location of your smartphone at any time and to be able to adapt based on whether or not you are in a specific geographic area of tot kilometers close to your home.
For example, they can activate automatically while you are returning from a trip and you are only a few kilometers from home.
Is it too hot or too cold and you don’t want to move off the couch or under the duvet? There is no problem, one of my favorite comfort of smart thermostats is that they allow to be controlled directly from a smartphone even from inside the house, just open the app and you can manually adjust the desired temperature. Or you can decide to prepare the house by heating it while you are at work and you are about to return.
Some thermostats efficiently monitor the cold / heat system and can recognize and warn you in the event of any problems or system malfunctions, immediately noticing decreases in performance.
Best 2019 smart wifi timer-thermostat
1. Nest T3010IT, my choice at home
– Fast and efficient to learn and interface with your habits
– Excellent construction
– Maximum compatibility
– A little expensive
– Not compatible with Apple Homekit
The advantage of the Nest on other similar systems is undoubtedly the highly advanced learning algorithm, much more elaborate and smart than that of competitors.
Each house has different heating needs that depend on factors such as the thermal inertia inside it, the way in which it is naturally isolated, the type of heating terminals and the geographical position, with relative different thermal findings.
The Nest has done an excellent job in identifying these factors to the best to be able to break them down and adapt them to a super intelligent algorithm that allows to understand the heating curve of a given environment and therefore adapt it to factors such as the weather forecast in real time, it is It is obvious that a house in Valle D’Aosta in a cold and high humidity period will have different thermal needs than one in Catania in the summer.
The Nest can be adjusted both from a remote smartphone and comfortably locally, recording a chronology of the most used parameters and optimizing them for better exploitation of energy resources and greater savings. And also to be able to work even in the case of a lack of connection.
It also allows you to thermoregulate multiple thermal zones within the home.
The Nest Learning Thermostate thermostat is built with state-of-the-art materials and is equipped with a reactive screen that is easy to use.
Great design to keep up-to-date in modern high-tech homes, the display is very bright and there is no need to strain your eyes or rack your brains to use it. The Nest makes user friendliness its strong point. We can say that in a certain sense this brand is Apple’s smart temperature control systems.
The Nest app is compatible with all types of mobile devices, Android, iOS and WindowsPhone, if you have multiple Nest products you can manage them all simultaneously via a single platform. A great convenience for those who are fond of demotic and aim to install more and more intelligent systems in the coming years.
The package includes a Nest Link thermostat and relay, designed to be able to receive the commands of the system « brain » from a distance and thus be able to immediately control the boiler of our house at will.
To operate, the thermostat needs a small power supply supplied in the kit, so it must necessarily be positioned near a power outlet.
Remember to install it away from heat sources, as the thermostats are extremely delicate devices with very advanced electronic parts.
You need to make sure that the wifi signal in that area is always constant so as not to have surprises and find yourself the thermostat permanently disconnected. It is therefore necessary to carry out tests before proceeding to the actual installation.
Furthermore it cannot be further than 30 meters from the Nest Link relay.
2. BTicino Smarther SX8000W
– Good invoice quality
– Excellent Ticino assistance
– The software leaves something to be desired
– Geolocation could be improved
The BTicino is a famous and respected house in the field of home automation, in this case we will consider their new Smarther SX8000W product.
Installation is very simple, you can directly contact a Ticino technician who will support you both by phone and live in the assembly of this thermostat.
The minimal and modern design has won him the IF Design Award 2017, an international industrial design award.
The front is white with a glass effect, very futuristic and elegant, the display is well integrated and all the main information and functions are immediately displayed. The touch keys on the surface make it very easy to change the temperature and the various smart parameters.
The BTicino Thermostat app, available for Android and iOS devices, allows you to remotely manage the thermostat when you are away from home. There is the very comfortable Boost mode that allows you to bypass our usual automatic programming adaptive to our habits and simply take advantage of all the heating power as quickly as possible for a range of time ranging from 30 to 90 minutes. In the case for example you should go home earlier than expected.
Using your smartphone’s GPS, the bTicino Thermostat allows you to keep your position under control in order to regulate heating and optimize consumption.
The app allows you to manage multiple programmable thermostats with the same profile so as to have even very complex programming if you need to.
Thermostat is certainly a good product, but with a big flaw, that is the software side.
Many users have complained that this fact often collapses and works very slowly, sometimes you even have problems accessing them remotely and only works if connected to the same wifi network.
Ticino is already working to solve this problem and we are waiting for a firmware and driver update in the near future in order to save a product that in my opinion is excellent from all other points of view.
3. Netatmò, beautiful and very simple to install
– Battery powered
– Extremely easy to install
– Poor touch display sensitivity
The Netatmò thermostat has a great design, the display is of the e-ink type (the same as the kindle amazon) which allows extremely low power consumption and makes it independent of the power supply to feed, in fact it works with 3 common AAA batteries. This is an advantage for those who wish to install it away from a wall equipped with an electric cable, but at the same time it means that every few months it will require the replacement of the batteries. There is no problem in this case because we will be notified via the smartphone app provided.
Unfortunately there is a bit of latency between when you touch the screen and the actual reaction of the latter. The time that passes between when the input and the actual response can be a bit annoying for some, but considering that we will not be changing every minute the temperature of our environment should not be a huge problem.
And most of the operations can be performed through the simple and effective smartphone app provided.
The thermostat is sold with its own remote relay to be connected directly to our boiler, this also does not need to be connected to the electric socket because it works with convenient AAA batteries.
The control unit, also as we said on batteries, can be positioned where it seems best without too many problems, but it is enough to remember not to change its position inside the house too often or we could run into synchronization problems with regards to the system smart self-learning system.
The beauty of Netatmò is that it is designed to be installed even by inexperienced users as quickly as possible, in fact a small and simple configuration is enough and the system is immediately ready for use. We can practically forget about it, except as regards the moment in which we will have to replace the batteries, but this is not a great headache that can stop us from recommending this chronothermostat.
It resembles the Nest in terms of functions, and it also seems that the basic algorithms of optimization and adaptation of the heating experience are extremely similar. This clearly sounds all to the advantage of Netatmò, because the Nest already offers an excellent system of domestic integration.
The Netatmò however unlike the Nest is not equipped with a presence sensor, to realize or not our presence in the home is in fact strictly referring to our simple GPS position, it is obviously a sort of simplification and to someone this may seem a bit too approximate , but I assure you that in the end the final result is practically the same.
4. Tado, smart thermostat
tado ° Smart Thermostat Basic Kit V3 – Management …
- Manage heating with tado ° Smart Thermostat via app for smartphones, tablets and PCs
- Guaranteed savings thanks to the tado ° geolocation function that allows you to cut heating costs by up to 31%. NEW: Open Window Detection function
– Easy to use
– Display not very bright
The Tado is an excellent German thermostat that certainly does not look good next to the monsters presented previously.
On the front of this smart timed thermostat there are two very comfortable touch-sensitive buttons to raise or lower the temperature. Furthermore there is a physical button that can be pressed to activate the display and scroll forward and backward through the pages.
In conditions of a lot of light there is some problem to read the display to be honest, clearly it is not a TV so it does not expect to be observed for whole hours, but for some this may represent a serious problem. We think of those who may not have an impeccable view.
In low light conditions it is practically perfect.
The app supplied with the Tado is very well designed and easy to use, it does not offer incredible customizations or advanced settings. It is designed to be minimal and immediate, to be used even by less experienced users who are simply looking for a control program that does its duty without too many frills. Remarkable is the comic representation of the house with icons that allow to understand who is actually inside and who is not.
The basic kit consists of a timer-thermostat and Bridge Tado, there is no real relay to be installed on the boiler.
The installation of the Tado is not too complex but unfortunately it is not as simple as that of the Netatmò.
The Tado Bridge requires a 230V power supply and a direct connection via Ethernet cable to the home router.
The thermostat in question operates on batteries and can be easily installed to replace the old analogue home thermostat.
The basic functions are clearly those of GPS recognition and intelligent adaptation to our habits.
The humidity sensor then allows, and here this thermostat excels and beats the competition, to recognize exactly when and if an open window is inadvertently left and to be able to intervene by switching off the boiler and thus limiting energy waste.
5. Honeywell Lyric T6 spin
– Honeywell brand recognized as one of the best in the field
– Not compatible with Windows Phone
Honeywell is a very important brand in the production of intelligent programmable thermostats.
The Lyric T6 thermostat is square in shape, with a silver-colored frame. The display is high contrast touch to be used even by users with less visual capacity. Very comfortable. Also equipped with backlighting to have excellent visibility and usability even in conditions of excessive or poor lighting. Promoted with full marks.
The wire version is designed to be installed on the wall, replacing a traditional thermostat.
As always there is a need to connect the relay module directly to the boiler, in the terminals where the analog thermostat should normally be connected. The connection is by means of two wires and obviously the already existing ones can be reused, making sure to connect them exactly as in the thermostat diagram that is being replaced.
It is possible as always to use the classic time schedule or take advantage of the ‘geofencing’, or the GPS localization system, which will allow our thermostat to behave in relation to our movements near or far from our home.
The Lyric application made specifically to handle this Honeywell model allows complete remote management of the system, which is also fully compatible with Apple HomeKit platforms.
There is no humidity sensor present, let alone presence.
The advantage of this product is without a shadow of a doubt the brand that it carries with it. In fact, Honeywell is perhaps the best brand of thermostats in existence and has an enviable network of dealers and assistants in Europe, making the purchase of its products very reliable. There is nothing to fear, for any problem it is possible to call the assistance directly and you will be welcomed with courtesy and competence.
The Honeywell Lyric T6R is framed for a fairly high consumer level given the multiple options and compatibility that distinguish it, one of Apple’s HomeKits.
The installation does not require the intervention of a technician, although it is recommended that someone help you if you are not very experienced in electronics or tea-making. It is better not to take risks when you are directly connected to the electrical system. It is good to remember to turn off the main panel of the house whenever you are preparing to intervene directly on the electrical sockets.
The external unit has a test button, and this is a great advantage compared to the models of other brands, because it allows us to turn on the boiler directly, without even needing to connect the external unit, and in this way we can evaluate the installation links just performed verifying if everything goes the right way or if there is eventually need for some correction.
Configuring the LYRIC app is very simple and fast, just enter the password of our home wifi, this step is essential as the thermostat works on the internet.
After a couple of settings related to georeferencing you go directly to the connection with the Apple HomeKit for which you just scan the unique code placed on a sticker behind the internal unit.
The management of the boiler can be done locally via the comfortable and elegant LCD display, or much faster via our smartphone.
There are many who, even when they are at home, prefer to use the app since this is in most cases more efficient for fast adjustment of the system.
The boiler can be controlled in a vocal way through Siri, sure a little touch of class to effect to impress our friends when they visit us.
Ultimately Honeywell is a good thermostat for slightly advanced users, despite the lack of integration with Windows Phone systems. We all know that today most users use Android or Apple iPhone, but it would be wise not to forget that audience, and they are not few, who use the Windows system.
All in all a great product that I recommend.
How do they install?
It is possible to install your own smart thermostat if you have some manual skills and some basic knowledge of electronics. Otherwise it is better to contact a professional.
Remember to switch off the main electric switch before proceeding with any intervention and check that the wires do not touch each other near the terminal.
If you are not careful and do not know what you are doing, you run the risk of burning the transformer or causing serious problems in the home electrical system, if you do not know what you are doing please contact a more experienced friend or a specialized technician .
The installation involves connecting a relay to the boiler, so as to be able to communicate efficiently via radio with the thermostat placed in another room.
If you are dealing with a multi-level house there is a need to connect a relay on each individual zone valve to have a comprehensive and distinct control of the heating of the house.
Then you need to switch to installing the control unit of our system, here’s how:
Remove the old analog thermostat and mark the wires as they are connected to the base, this will be different in every different situation. My old thermostat, for example, had Green, White and Yellow.
Mark each individual cable connected to the designated letter, then remove the wires from the base and remove this from the wall.
Then attach our new wifi thermostat to the base in the wall and connect the wires to the corresponding ports as previously marked.
Test your WiFi signal.
In order to use a wifi thermostat as its name indicates, it is essential to have a healthy wireless connection within your home. To test if the signal is strong near where you intend to install the thermostat it is necessary with a tablet or a mobile phone to try to stream a video by placing yourself next to the desired location, if the stream is constant and fluid there is nothing to worry about, it means that the signal is strong enough.
The thermostat is coupled with a wireless through a thermostatic head, which controls the regulation of the entire hydraulic heating system.
Usually the thermostats work with a lithium battery that must be replaced every 2 years.
To test whether the assembly was successful, we can try turning it on and setting it to shut down within 10 minutes. If after this time the thermostat will deactivate the heating, we can rest easy.
Why use a smart timed thermostat?
The gas companies advise their users to install a wifi thermostat to save on their bills, in a world where the energy and environmental issue is becoming more and more serious, it is not bad to also look at the ecological issue as well as to one’s own pockets.
Models like Netatmo, Tado, Momit and the Vimar easily adapt to any boiler.
There are also more complex systems that allow you to control the individual radiators, let’s imagine the case of a multi-level home with independent heating.
How much do smart thermostats cost?
The simplest models are also found under 150 euros, and have the functions necessary to control a small house, if you need multi-level and multilevel solutions, then the price goes up a bit.
Do you save?
The wireless thermostat as well as being much more practical and simple to use saves a lot on the gas bill, according to a calculation made in the previous six months comparing them with the past years I could personally verify a drop of as much as 800 euros per year on average. A nice saving in short.
The purchase and installation of new models of thermostats also fall within the 65% tax bonus for energy savings put forward by the Italian State.
It is good to remember that to save on heating costs it is first of all good to provide for better thermal insulation of the place where we live. For example, starting from window panes that can be replaced with other reinforced thermals or covered with invisible thermal films.
Even common sense is necessary to keep costs down, it is useless to aim to have 35 degrees at home in January and run short-sleeved at home, you can settle for more humane temperatures thus saving on your bill and decreasing our environmental impact.
What is the 65% Ecobonus?
Attention, initially the benefit was valid only for 2017, but there seems to be some good news.
The 2018 financial maneuver has in fact extended the Ecobonus for the whole of 2018. For the purchase and installation of windows, windows and solar shading, the deduction is no longer 65% but falls to 50%. Unchanged at 65% the bonus for solar panels for hot water, heat pumps, thermal coats and other interventions on the building envelope. The 70 and 75% discounts for condos up to the end of 2021 are confirmed.
In condominium: the Ecobonus 2018 provides a deduction of 65% which can reach 70% if it concerns the building envelope (the coat) and 75% if the certification proves the improvement of the winter and summer energy performance. The bonus is stabilized until 2021 and remains deductible in 10 years. The Ecobonus also applies to hotels.
If a citizen today decides to intervene on his home with interventions that aim at saving energy, he is entitled to benefit from the Ecobonus tax deduction of 65% of the costs incurred to increase the energy efficiency level of the house or condominium.
This benefit applies in the following cases:
a) reduction of energy needs for heating;
b) thermal improvement of the building through insulation, replacement of floors, windows, fixtures;
c) installation of solar panels.
d) replacement of winter air conditioning systems.
In a world increasingly afflicted with environmental problems, in which the issue of electricity is increasingly becoming a decisive factor, it is vital to decide as soon as possible personal solutions starting from one’s daily habits in order to put a brake on this problem.
Of course it is not possible to do without heating and above all in big cities there is no real alternative to gas. Since we cannot avoid using this precious source of energy it is our task to optimize its use, avoiding unnecessary waste, as is usual in this historical period.
It is good not to use the heating in an uninhabited house, unless you do it in very cold areas, such as high mountains, to prevent the pipes from freezing over.
Furthermore, temperatures do not need to exceed 24 degrees in order to be comfortable at home, I know people who are not happy at any time of the day and year if they are not 32 We must not abuse these modern technologies, the contemporary world offers so many possibilities to live in a comfortable and healthy way, but it is important not to take advantage of it too much and always keep the common sense suitable to use our resources in the most intelligent and sustainable way.
Installers have always advised avoiding continuous switching on and off of the boiler, and instead opt for a standard temperature of 20 degrees inside the house, to be increased only in the necessary time bands.
A boiler treated in this way will tend to make much more than one subjected to continuous heat and cold stress. The chronothermostat is nothing but a switch that tells the boiler when it is switched on or off.
Smart thermostats are obviously better than those commonly installed for years because first of all they allow total remote management, therefore allowing us to control our boiler even on those days when attention to heating is certainly not our priority and we can forget to example of lowering the temperature before leaving home.
The type of adjustment they allow is also extremely more precise, avoiding using the same setting throughout the winter and adapting it instead to our real needs.
I hope this guide was helpful and that you were able to find the best thermostat for your needs.
