Many of you will have heard of ultrasonic humidifiers.
But do you know exactly what they are and what they are for? Click on the video to find out.
I have two small children and I have always worried about the quality of the air they breathed in the house. I always had the feeling that the one in my house for various structural reasons and the environment around it was very dry and difficult to inhale, the real difference but I could appreciate it only with the purchase of a humidifier.
It was like going from night to day.
A dear medical friend has been able to advise me on the best ultrasonic humidifiers, exposing all the advantages that this technology has compared to the traditional ones.
Now I have practically become an expert in this world, so I decided to write a guide with my opinions and reviews regarding all the best models on the market.

Do ultrasonic humidifiers hurt?
In most cases, ultrasonic humidifiers are safe and do not pose health risks.
The ultrasonic frequencies they generate are not dangerous for humans and do not constitute any danger to their health, even for that of the little ones.
However, since they do not use heat to spray water, water contaminants may be dispersed in the air and then breathed.
The solution is very simple, just use distilled water and remember to clean the filter regularly.
The best 2018 ultrasonic humidifiers
1. TaoTronics, my favorite
TaoTronics Indoor Ultrasonic Jet Humidifier, …
- √ micro-poreuse colors – Water filter of microorganisms, calcium, magnesium ions for a healthy vaporization
- √ child-friendly humidifier for your home: adjust the humidity level and control the amount of vaporize
– Very quiet
– Purify the air like no other model
– The tank tends to detach from the base when it is moved
– Buttons a bit awkward
Here is the humidifier that I currently use at home and probably one of the best on the market today. It is extremely quiet and this peculiarity allows it to be used at night in the room where the children sleep without any danger of waking them up.
I have two children with a very light sleep and this device helped me make the room in which they play and sleep healthier without risking waking them up as they did with other models in the past.
It works at three different emission levels, has a large tank that lasts for several hours, a filter and a display that is very easy to read and use.
An interesting feature is the ionizer, which however can be switched off as desired.
This serves to charge the air with negative ions that bind to the dust particles and make them settle instead of holding them in suspension, in this way you don’t run the risk of breathing them, an excellent idea to improve even more the features already wholesome traditional humidifier.
If it is put into night mode the blue light turns off like magic, this serves not to disturb sleep in a room that is used for sleeping, an excellent option that I always use.
On the other hand, when the blue light is on, it makes the water level stand out during the day, so you can consult and immediately check how much it is missing when it is finished and eventually prepare to replace it.
During the activities of the day you don’t hear any noise from this device, while during the night, if there is total silence, it happens to feel a very light and almost inaudible hum, but I can assure you that it doesn’t bother anyone, it’s something to you immediately get used to it and you arrive early not to hear it, because you know the constant and deaf noises that you hear during the day are forfeited by the mind as part of the background silence of the surrounding environment, up to camouflage with this and not be noticeable.
The spout can be easily rotated 360 degrees to be able to direct all the steam in the direction you prefer.
It is possible to set a timer for switching off when you want it best, for example if you are preparing to leave the house you can program the end of the humidifier operations in a few hours, thus saving water and electricity.
The timer is very easy to program and in a few seconds you will be in charge of its operation, even my husband who is technologically impeded (yes, I am the couple’s nerd), can use it without any problem.
Consumption is limited and air humidity rises immediately.
One thing that I did not like about this product is that you set the desired humidity level, once it has been reached inside the room it turns off automatically.
It suffices however that the level is lowered slightly to reactivate the humidifier from the beginning, I would have preferred a greater tolerance, because in this way we always witness a real switch on and off continuously.
Clearly, as I said above, since it is a very silent device this is not a problem, it does not bother me, but sometimes this attacks / detaches seems to me a bit meaningless.
2. Philips Air Quality AC4080 / 10, high class purifier and humidifier
Philips Air Quality AC4080 / 10 Purifier + Humidifier …
- Removes ultrathin particles up to 0.02 µm (125 times smaller than PM2.5), 99.97% of common allergens and 96% of airborne viruses *
- Allows pollen allergy sufferers to suffer significantly fewer symptoms such as sneezing, tears, red eyes, nasal itching, itching and runny nose ***
– Automatic block to avoid polluting the air when the filter is to be replaced
– Low electrical consumption
Here we are in front of a product of enormous quality, endowed with a futuristic design, perfect if we intend to integrate it into ultramodern homes, but that can also be easily adapted to classic contexts, a real jolly aesthetic.
The filtering technology is the highly advanced Vitashield IPS, capable of sanitizing 99.99% of the air by killing all the bacteria and viruses present. A product therefore ideal for anyone who lives with elderly or small children.
Philips is a home that has donated great products over the past decades, and this time too it keeps to its coat of arms, this humidifying device is in fact equipped with an air quality sensor developed by Japanese laboratories, which allows to accurately monitor the air with scientific precision.
It is extremely quiet, it is not noticed practically when it is in operation, especially during the day. Consumption is also very limited, we travel on 30Watts.
At night it is also possible to place it in silent mode so as to be even less invasive and be able to use it without problems in the rooms where you sleep. Very comfortable.
There is a very clever function that warns you when the filter needs to be replaced, and at that same moment the air purifier functions will be automatically blocked, thus avoiding that bacteria stuck in the filter end up in the air.
Perfect for those who live in families where there are many elements suffering from various allergies.
In fact, using this device every day the symptoms of allergies will tend to disappear over time or at least reduce in intensity. A real panacea therefore.
The ignition cannot be programmed, but in return there is a convenient timer that will allow you to decide at what time the shutdown should take place.
Great for those who, for example, have to go to work and want to humidify the home environment, but cannot be close to the device to switch it off when the job is done, just do two calculations and set the timer accordingly.
Consumption is up to 60W, so it will not affect your electricity bill in any way.
Another very important function is the possibility of indicating the concentration of PM in the air.
It will be enough to place it next to the window, once it has completed its natural cycle of cleaning the air throughout the course of the night, when it will be morning and the windows will open the concentration of the PM will rise, and then fall once the window will be closed.
Use a single advanced filter like the one present in normal home air conditioners, then just wash it under water, there are also two additional filters that will instead be replaced completely when dirty. But don’t worry because the Philips AC4080 / 10 will direct you to alert you.
The washable filter should be washed once a month, while the other two have an average duration of 6 months, so you will not have to face too many headaches in order to guarantee 100% functioning even in the years to come.

Effectively circulates room air 4 times per hour with the new version motor to obtain a rapid purification, ideal for bedroom, office, living room.
– Small and transportable
– Low consumption
– It cannot humidify large rooms
This Levoit is a product of excellent construction, with an interesting design, nice to see inside the house, not invasive.
Even this very silent, in fact, within this guide, the least common denominator that I tried to follow was the lack of loud noises during use.
At home during nighttime hours of absolute silence, you will be able to hear the noise slightly, even at the minimum speed, but nothing that prevents you from sleeping or that may disturb your concentration.
In fact, remember that constant sounds are not as annoying as impulse sounds, think for example of the ticking of a clock in a room, after a few hours you live in it you will automatically stop hearing it, and it will be like being in the presence of absolute silence.
Unfortunately, the set speed is kept in memory when the device is switched off and then switched on again. When it turns back on, in fact regardless of the speed set before it will always start again from level 2.
It is a purifier and humidifier with smaller dimensions than the others.
Equipped with 3 filters and HEPA technology, capable of filtering almost 100% of dust, harmful particles for health, mold and smoke.
The consumption is only 25W and the noise is less than 50dB.
Equipped like the others with a convenient night function, to lower the brightness of the LED and thus reduce the light of the product inside the room.
The only flaw is that it cannot be used in large rooms, in fact it cannot cover large surfaces, a real shame because otherwise it would be a great product.
The warranty is 2 years and is assured by the quality of Levoit assistance.

KLARSTEIN Tramontana – Air Purifier, Ionizer, HEPA Filter, …

– Great design
– The manual is not in Italian
This is the humidifier that my sister uses at home, the peculiarity of the Klarstein Tramontana is the extraordinary possibility of using aromas inside the diffuser, so as to spread the fragrance favored by us in the air while at the same time purifying the air. In fact this humidifier is highly performing and manages to clean the air of germs, bacteria and molds up to 98.7%.
Rich in features, the duration of the filters is considerable, although obviously proportionate to the hours in which we intend to use it.
The design is excellent, the device is very space-saving, which makes it easily positionable in any corner of our house. It integrates perfectly with the furniture.
The Klarstein Tramontana is equipped in the sales kit with a comfortable aroma sachet and a remote control to decide at a distance of the operating options, including timer, distance and speed.
Consumption is average, ie 36W, but relatively low compared to other household appliances, noise is also very limited.
The radius of action is 25 square meters, so he will be able to act in medium rooms.
Recommended for those looking for something different.
5. Breathe Fresh
– Very low consumption
– Small dimensions
– Usable only in small rooms
A great alternative to leaving the window open to change the air.
With this system it will be possible to purify your room in just a few minutes.
The Breathe Fresh product is very quiet, although it tends to get louder as the filter gets dirty, and then it gets very quiet once this is cleaned up.
Breathe Fresh like Levoit is to be preferred for small environments, or in any case not excessively large, otherwise it will be not very functional.
It is equipped with technology with negative ions, and allows you to exploit the electrostatic capabilities to block dirt particles that should alternatively be breathed causing very serious problems, especially to those who suffer from asthma or other respiratory diseases.
This device is also excellent for removing mildew inside rooms, or unpleasant odors and various allergens.
It is also prepared to use the precious ultraviolet light technology, which allows to fight all the viruses present in the air, including germs and bacteria carrying serious pathologies.
As far as cleaning is concerned, we recommend cleaning the rod with a damp cloth and then letting it dry without intervening directly with other objects.
Consumption is one of the lowest ever, in fact we wander around the 14W, unlike other models and brands, but in this case there is no need for maintenance on the filters, but only on the electrostatic rod, which will be cleaned to remove the residues of the ionization process.
The pros and cons of ultrasonic humidifiers
With so many options it can be really complicated to decide which humidifier to buy for your home.
Some are traditional humidifiers while others are equipped with the most modern technologies.
Let’s start by saying that cold humidifiers are much safer for health than hot ones, we’re going to find out exactly why.
Before proceeding to purchase a humidifier it will be necessary to take into consideration all the important factors connected with the use of this device.
Do you care more about price, effectiveness or do you live at home with children?
Once the list is narrowed down to suit your needs, it will be much easier and quicker to identify the most suitable type of humidifier at once.
The humidifiers are divided into two broad categories: hot and cold humidifiers.
Both are designed to purify the air and increase the humidity level, but the basic operating principle is very different.
Let’s see what the advantages and disadvantages are for hot and cold humidifiers.
This type of humidifier is designed to create a thin vapor from heated water.
Since this type of humidifier works with hot and not cold water or at room temperature, it can cause mold and bacteria to grow and develop in the internal parts of the humidifier.
This is why hot humidifiers are considered by some to be the healthiest on the market.
They are also able to collect and use the precious minerals obtained from the warming of the water.
They can also work without replacing the filters.
A common type of hot humidifiers are steam and vaporisers.
Vaporizers tend to be healthy because they can produce steam with less minerals than other humidifiers. Perfect to use during the winter.
Cold humidifiers are structured instead to disperse cold spray into the air.
The mist of water vapor is released at room temperature and can increase the humidity level in the home.
There are two types of cold humidifiers: evaporation and ultrasonic.
Both produce the same results but work very differently.
For example evaporative humidifiers increase humidity by means of the fan and a special filter.
Water is stored in a reserve, a container in the shape of a bowl flowing in this filter, here it is blown by the fan and transformed into a cold water vapor.
Ultrasonic humidifiers instead use the vibrating technology to break water into very small particles that form a fine dust.
Thanks to this highly advanced system, ultrasonic devices are much quieter than those with evaporation.
The minerals collected and released in the ultrasonic humidifiers can be transformed into « white powder », which can attach itself to the furniture of the house.
This powder is not harmful to health and can be avoided by using distilled water.
Cold humidifiers are the perfect option for humidifying large portions of a house or building.
Pro of cold humidifiers:
Cold humidifiers require less electricity to function than hot ones.
They are ok to use in homes with children, and not as dangerous as cold ones.
They are cheaper than hot ones because they do not require water heating elements inside them.
They can be purchased in very small and transportable versions.
Against cold humidifiers:
When using humidifiers that require a fan such as those with evaporation, you need to replace the filter regularly.
Both cold and hot humidifiers require regular maintenance to ensure optimal use over time.
Pros of hot humidifiers:
They can slightly heat a room if it’s cold.
Against hot humidifiers:
They tend to have to use much more electricity since they have to produce continuous heat.
They are not recommended in homes with children, also because the water contained within them will tend to reach an almost boiling temperature, which makes them a potential danger for children who could burn themselves if they decided to play with the device.
They require more maintenance than cold humidifiers.
Note: if you use a hot humidifier in a house where children are present, it is good practice to place it out of their reach, for example above a wardrobe, or in a very high place.
Given their hot jet they can be uncomfortable in summer, as they will tend to heat the room in which they operate.
When the fan is on, the cold humidifiers tend to cool the room in which they are housed slightly.
This could be a discriminating factor in deciding which type of humidifier to buy, if you live in a cold climate, it could be ideal to buy hot humidifiers and vice versa. In Italy, given the constantly mild climate except for a couple of months a year, cold ones are certainly more recommended.
Cold humidifiers are usually used by individuals with asthma or severe allergies. The purified air can make the inhalation of the air by these subjects much easier in domestic contexts.
Hot humidifiers can be used to calm the symptoms of asthma and allergies. One must consider a very important thing, if you have ever been in a sauna and this seemed very relaxing and comfortable, you might tend to prefer hot humidifiers, because they are based on the same principle and can give a similar effect.
If on the other hand we tend to prefer a cooler environment and the sauna is not for us, because maybe it gives us a headache and we tend to suffer even a little low pressure, cold humidifiers could be the definitive choice suitable for our needs.
Hot humidifiers can be used as a sort of aerosol that disperses inside the room, for this type of use it is best to consult your doctor.
Both types can help cough and flu symptoms, but they also tend to be good for congestion care,
This is one of the main reasons why the use of humidifiers is chosen in domestic contexts, not only can these make the air much healthier and more breathable, but they can be a fundamental help for our health.
How do humidifiers work?
Hot humidifiers can work producing virtually no noise, most of the sounds coming from these devices will be the boiling water or the gurgling of this when it is prepared for diffusion.
Hot humidifiers use elements to heat or boil the water contained within them.
This process creates a vapor which is then released inside the room, creating steam and thus raising the degree of humidity.
Some models are sold with absorption pads that capture and accumulate the remaining minerals once the steam is dispersed in the air.
Cold humidifiers, on the other hand, work differently depending on the model and the manufacturer.
They also have different components, because the technology can be more varied and interpreted differently depending on the company.
Some will in fact mount a water valve connected to a pipe, while others will be equipped with a fan.
Evaporation-based humidifiers require a fan and a filter to produce steam, whereas ultrasonic humidifiers use a vibrating technology that breaks up water particles into very small molecules.
Cold humidifiers are more popular than hot ones. This is because they offer a much wider range of options that meets the needs of a larger type of audience.
There are also models that use hot or cold water depending on the need.
Tips for using the humidifier
- Always remember to place the humidifier on flat and horizontal surfaces that cannot be easily reached by children.
- The power cord must also be out of reach of the little ones.
- When filling the humidifier with water, always make sure that the device is disconnected.
- Clean the filters regularly to prevent the formation of bacteria and mold.
There are many reasons to decide to buy a humidifier.
Whether you choose a hot or a cold model, the decision to equip your home with such a device is a big step forward to improve your 360-degree lifestyle.
These objects are a panacea for producing clean air in any space,
and anyone interested in healthy breathing should consider buying them.
