How to mount the trimmer wire
This theme has already been addressed in the guide to electric trimmers, again here on ProContro.
There is nothing simpler as you can see from the video above, which shows you how to change the trimmer wire.
The thread does not change every day, so it is normal to forget how to mount it.
The secret is precisely to do what the coil itself tells you. Just identify the attachment points of the two ends of the wire.
Hooked the first head, you have to wrap the thread around the head in the right direction. Then you have to hook the other end, or the final part of the wire, into the appropriate slot that is shown on the head.
How to choose the thread for your brushcutter
There are some basic parameters that you need to consider when choosing the best wire: the power of the motor, the type of soil and the wire section.
The basic rule is surely the one that says that the higher the engine displacement, the bigger the wire that can be mounted on the head can be.
But you have to be careful and you have to consider some things: for example, that a wire resists some air resistance when it rotates at high speed. This clearly means more effort on the engine.
Grass also affects resistance when it hits the wire. The greater the thickness of the grass to be cut, the more effort the motor will make, which is added to that due to the size of the wire installed.
So you understand how the basic rule needs corrections, if we want to say so. The speech is simple: you must always find the right compromise between the work you are about to perform and the power of the engine available.
Usually mounting the "right" wire is the best solution in terms of efficiency and consumption. And by "right" I don't mean the biggest you can mount. Often finding the right thread can only be a matter of experience.
I would follow this scheme: with 25-displacement engines, I would use a 2 mm thick wire. Going up to 30 cc and 35 cc, I suggest you use a 2.4 or 2.7 mm wire. I would use the 3mm wire, big and demanding for the engine, for a 40 cc. On the market there are also 4 mm wires, but I recommend them to those who have a really powerful brushcutter.
Type of terrain
What grows in your garden or in your lawn or in your estate is closely connected to the type of wire and the thickness you need to do a great job.
Also taking into account the brushcutter motor, the aim is to achieve maximum efficiency with minimum effort.
For a simple garden with very thin grass, a thread of less than 3 millimeters is simply perfect. It allows you to mow easily and guarantees excellent results even on the edges.
For a larger lawn with particularly hard and tall weeds, perhaps with brambles, we should start at 3 millimeters.
A 3 mm wire can be excellent already for a tall grass but if it is particularly thick, and if the ground itself is very dirty and shows many difficulties, then you can think of opting for a 3.5 mm.
A 4 mm wire is for very difficult fields.
I remind you that you don't necessarily have to cut with the head, but you can mount a rotating disk head, equipped with a blade, for really complicated jobs.
There are two main categories: round section wire is square section wire.
The round wire offers less resistance to air as it is more aerodynamic. Cutting with this type of wire is more precise and makes less noise.
The square wire offers more resistance to air during rotation. The cut is less precise and makes more noise.
The important difference lies in wear and therefore in the life of the wire. If the round wire on one side guarantees less noise and a sharper cut, on the other it will last less and therefore it will tend to be consumed faster.
Another difference lies in the fact that, for obvious reasons, the square wire is much more violent and therefore is not suitable for finishing edges.
There are also variants that try to exploit the advantages of each section, such as the helical wire, the star wire.
An almost self-contained category can be considered to be that of wires with a core. Inside a very normal nylon thread a smaller aluminum cable is inserted, light but that guarantees more strength and lasts longer.
Among the reviewed threads I obviously considered these various types.
Best Brushcutter Thread
Below are the reviews in order of wire thickness. The first will be 1.5 mm, the last 4 mm.
The best brand on the market is definitely Oregon, and its Nylium line is undoubtedly the most effective trimmer wire I've ever seen.
Good alternatives are Maniver, Black & Decker and Greenstar.
Black & Decker, round section, 1.5 mm – perfect for tools of the same brand
I want to start with the Black & Decker solution, which offers a perfect thread for its brushcutters. Obviously one-way solution but the B&D tools are among the best sellers and if you have one, you can only opt for this thread.
Being made on purpose, they are clearly optimized for the instrument and there is no problem of compatibility or quality. In short, it is the first choice if you already use B&D.
It is a 1.5 mm thick wire, which is excellent and very effective for edging work. Black & Decker has all the solutions, here I propose you the one that provides three 10 meter long reels each. A very convenient solution especially considering the price at which it is sold.
If used wisely, the thread lasts very long. 10 meters for each roll ensure months and months of work without replacing the wire. Just remember that being 1.5 millimeters easily break if your ground has obstacles like branches or stones.
Make sure you clean the garden well and this will be the perfect trimmer wire for you.
Maniver, round section, 2 mm – perfect for a low-power brushcutter
Here, the Maniver trimmer wire is one of the best on the market. It is characterized by a great quality that allows it to last for a long time and guarantee really excellent mowing or trimming.
Having a round section of 2 millimeters, it should clearly be used on less powerful brush cutters, preferably electric or battery operated. It's a perfect thread for a small garden.
The package includes a 100 meter long coil of wire, which is enough for months before you need to think about the next purchase.
In my opinion, the Maniver trimmer wire is an economic solution. There are other options of the same type, but the Maniver is the one that beats them all, first of all for the price but also for the quality, as it is a very resistant thread that has nothing less than the more expensive ones.
Maniver means guarantee and therefore it is highly recommended if you have a low displacement brushcutter.
Oregon, star section, 2 mm – great quality but expensive
If the Maniver is the economical solution, the Oregon trimmer wire is the full price one so to speak. The advantage of spending so much is to mount on your tool a really quality thread that guarantees a job with bows, a thread that lasts and that does not break easily.
The starry wire Oregon has the advantage of being halfway between a round and a square. So you will have the silence and the low impact with the air of a round section wire and in addition a good cutting force thanks to the star section.
The package includes a 15 meter reel. There are certainly not many, it is true, but it is a thread that I think should be tried at least once to understand what it means to mount a high quality trimmer wire.
Let me be clear, you can't cut down the trees. Filo However, this wire knows how to make way even on tall grass with roots without giving the slightest sign of breakage.
If you have a trimmer of the right displacement (25 cc) you absolutely have to try the Oregon wire at least once and I assure you that it won't come back.
Oregon Nylium, star section, 2.4 mm – size of everything
If you ask me what's the absolute best trimmer wire ever, I'll answer you, Oregon Nylium without even asking you to finish the question.
Oregon already guarantees excellent quality wires but now they have come out with this new Nylium technology which is nothing short of effective and phenomenal.
The wire is made of a special combination of nylon and aluminum powder which turns out to be really powerful when mowing. It is really what is called a professional solution from all points of view: quality and obviously price.
After trying Oregon Nylium I simply realized that there is nothing better, to say that it is effective is little. Here I am talking to you about the 2.4 mm wire but you will find many different options depending on what is best suited to your terrain and your brushcutter.
The minimum thickness that you find on the market is 1.3 millimeters that transform your small brushcutter into a small monster. The largest thickness is 3.75 mm. With this wire mounted on a powerful brushcutter probably the grass of your lawn, for fear, will cut itself
If you want the best brush cutter, then you want Oregon Nylium.
Ribiland, square section, 3 mm – good quality at a good price
A 3 mm trimmer wire is challenging and must be mounted on tools with adequate power. We also take into account that this thickness is felt on the engine as these magnitudes start to have a greater impact with the air, the resistance increases and the effort also.
It must therefore be understood that a 3 mm wire, especially like this square-section Ribiland, must be of good quality and workmanship if you want to have a really good job. And Ribiland does not disappoint on this.
I'm talking about a very good product that is also quite cheap. It arrives in a 50 meter reel in a convenient blister from which the cable unrolls very easily.
To read the reviews of those who have tried this made in Italy thread, we understand how it is really an excellent solution if you are looking for exactly this thickness for your brushcutter. The square section wire really lasts a lot and before replacing it will take some.
Greenstar, square section, 3.3 mm – perfect for powerful brushcutters
Here we enter the category of really big threads, those for demanding jobs in short.
The 3.3-inch Greenstar trimmer wire is the best around this price range. A high quality thread that lasts and cuts really well.
I was talking about demanding jobs, so I'm talking about quite powerful brushcutters here. If your tool is about 40 in size, but actually a little more, this line will be perfect for you.
You will immediately realize that the Greenstar thread is very resistant thanks to its square section which guarantees a long life. This wire is therefore perfect even on fairly complicated ground with not too hard grass and brambles.
The spool is 90 meters long and the thread is very resistant nylon.
Oregon Roundline, round section, 4 mm – best high thickness wire
Oregon again. The Nylium line stops at 3.75 mm thick but sometimes something bigger is needed. Like for example a 4 mm and this is the perfect solution.
The brand guarantees high quality. It is not particularly cheap but it is by far the best product in this category.
It is a wire that does not stop in front of any obstacle, it is suitable for quite powerful brushcutters and particularly difficult soils.
If you are looking for a 4mm and you want to spend your money really well, look no further. Oregon all your life.
Vigor, square section, 4 mm
Vigor has very competitive professional products on the market that have a great advantage over the competition: they have a price to leave with an open mouth.
Here I show you the 4 mm thick trimmer wire made with aluminum powder to guarantee longer life and great resistance.
For those who have a fairly powerful tool and want to spend little, maybe for those who want to calmly try a 4mm before moving on to more expensive solutions, Vigor is undoubtedly the perfect solution.
Very often you are forced to throw away a whole reel of wire because it does not last even a turn of the head. Why does it happen? Because the trimmer wire must be kept well and not left in a corner of the shed.
These wires are made to be stored in cool and damp places. Otherwise the thread dries up and its fragility goes.
Some even recommend storing it directly in the water so that it is always fresh and ready for use. This ensures a consistently high performance.
The colors of the thread
Don't be fooled by the different colors of the trimmer wire. There is no difference in quality or price.
The colors are decided by the various individual producers to diversify their products, nothing else.
If you think a green thread is better than a blue thread or an orange thread, stop wasting your energy. Rather, go to the retailer's site and check the real differences between the wires of different colors.
Probably the best for you is the color you thought was the worst!
As a result
We have seen together the best trimmer wires that our money can buy.
In addition, I also explained to you the various things to take into account to choose the most suitable thread for you.
I just have to wish you a good job in the garden and remember that always here on ProContro you will also find other guides on the garden and gardening that could be useful to you.
