I’m determined to get my review of my August Ipsy bag up before my September bag comes. I was actually really happy with this bag, like just the bag itself. It’s gorg and has a wonderful mermaid vibe, and it probably has a lot to do with the fact that Claire has picked a mermaid theme for her room redo but I’m on a real mermaid kick. The contents of my Ipsy bag were good this month, a lot better than July’s, but that’s really because I didn’t get anymore eyeshadow.
August Ipsy Bag Review
Rodial Smokey Eye Pen in Black
Like I mentioned in June I don’t use black eyeliner, but this is a gel liner that’s designed to be perfectly smoky and I’m in love. I think I’ll probably still pass this black one on to a friend and pick up the brown version, but the gel liner is so smooth and smudges perfectly but still stays in place. I put it through a grueling test on Saturday morning when helping set up for Logan’s first football game. In southeast Texas even the mornings are disgustingly humid. As I finally sat down in the bleachers just before the game started my hair, which I had straightened the night before because I guess I like wasting my own time, was a sweaty, frizzy mess and the amount of sweat under my boobs was positively unseemly, but my eyeliner was right where I’d put it that morning. I really liked this because it helped to make me feel put together but it took only a few minutes to apply. Great for quick mornings when you want to look like a member of the living but don’t have a lot of time, so pretty much every morning for me.
Trust Fund Beauty Liquid Lipstick in K, Bye
I haven’t used liquid lipsticks a lot. I have this idea of a goopy, sticky, messy sort of thing that feels like lead on my lips and tastes like wax. I’ve just always preferred the ease of application and lightness of balms and glosses. I don’t know if this is just a really good liquid lipstick or I’m completely wrong about them but I had zero of those issues. This was light and went on easily and had great coverage and color. I’ve actually been using it as a sort of stain because I’m not a fan of matte, so when combined with my current fave balm, L’Oréal Colour Riche Lip Balm in Nourishing Nude it makes for great color with plenty of shine.
Josie Maran Whipped Mud Mask in Vanilla Apricot
This mask smells divine and I really, really wanted to like it because I love Josie Maran products, the Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelée in Poppy Paradise is my absolute favorite. But I don’t know, I was rather underwhelmed. Usually after using a mask my face feels lighter or cleaner or sometimes even like it’s on fire, but there simply wasn’t any noticeable difference after using this mask. Maybe it’s the sort of product you have to use a few times to get a real benefit, but I was able to apply two masks from this sample size within a few days and still nothing.
Organic Surge Perfecting Face Polish
I’ve used Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Wash Pink Grapefruit Foaming Scrub since probably college and I love it, but alas microbeads are Satan’s tiny little balls that are polluting our waters and killing fish so I’ve decided to start actually caring about things that aren’t me and I’ve switched to the non-microbead version. It’s not a big deal because I’ve never had acne so I don’t even know why I use an acne face wash1, but I really miss that scrubbing feeling you get with microbeads. There are other natural products out there that have little scrubbies but in my experience – which admittedly was with a St. Ives product that might have been meant for feet – they feel less like a nice exfoliation and more like losing a slapfight with a sander. This face polish has finely ground olive stone and even though I don’t know what olive stone is I do like the way it feels on my face and how smooth my face feels afterwards. I love being able to wash and exfoliate in my morning shower so this now has a permanent spot on my little corner shelf in the shower that is supposed to be dedicated to me but is also encroached by kids’ products even though they have their own damn bathrooms in which to put all of their crap.
NYX Professional Makeup BORN TO GLOW LIQUID ILLUMINATOR in Gleam
I haven’t actually had a chance to try this one yet because somehow I managed to lose it which I was pretty upset about because I was really excited to try it out. I did find it though! I don’t remember putting it in my purse but I did and then I switched out of my navy and white jet set tote for a more fall colored one and didn’t check all of the pockets as I am wont to do.
Overall I was pretty happy with what I got in August. I did get another lip color and eyeliner but they weren’t just typical sticks and I felt like it was actually something new to try and explore. I’ve taken a peak at my September bag and I can’t wait for it get here! If you’re interested in trying out Ipsy I’d greatly appreciate you signing up with my referral link!
Lying, I do know. It’s because my obsession with pink grapefruit knows no bounds. ↩
