Okay American Gods on Starz is getting better and better every day. I talked about casting before, but things have gotten better. How is that even possible? I don’t know, it just is.
Gillian Anderson is Media. Yes, so much yes. The poster for the first episode on IMDB shows Anderson as Lucille Ball, which actually comes from a photoshoot done with Mark Seliger for US Magazine back in the ’90s. So fitting. So fitting in fact that Bryan Fuller even tweeted one of the shots from that photo shoot when announcing Media’s casting. If you’ve seen Bryan Fuller’s work with Anderson on Hannibal you know how riveting she can be. If you haven’t then you really need to change that.
Johnathan Tucker, that one dude we all vaguely remember from that one movie, will be playing Low Key Lyesmith and Crispin Glover, lord of the rats, is playing Mr. World. Interesting casting there. Glover will be great as Mr. World, he has a perfect sort of creepy intensity for that character, but I want to see how Tucker does as Low Key. Honestly Low Key was one of the hardest characters for me to picture when reading (and re-reading and re-reading) the book, so I feel like I’m most open to how the show will interpret him.
Orlando Jones is playing Mr. Nancy which is great because I love Jones but makes me pause because Mr. Nancy should be older. I’m seriously hoping for an Anansi Boys series as well and while it’d be great to see Jones in that, it wouldn’t really make sense given how young he is. When I thought of Mr. Nancy I always pictured Reg E. Cathy in my mind, but I’d have also like to have seen Bill Cobbs in the role.
Pablo Schreiber/Pornstache/I-Didn’t-Even-Know-Leiv-Schreiber-Had-a-Brother plays everyone’s favorite drunken leprechaun, Mad Sweeney. He’s shown with Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane, who are playing Shadow and Mr. Wednesday, respectively, in Jack’s Crocodile Bar in the first official photos exclusively from Entertainment Weekly. If the photos are any indication the show is shaping up to be faaaaaaaantastic.
