I honestly don’t know how many VHS tapes of Beauty & the Beast got wore out in our old Sony VCR. It was probably a lot though, considering how often my siblings and I watched Belle fall in love with her captor. A little weird now that we’re adults, but still magical because love and snow and France. I’ve been super stoked about the live-action version since it’s announcement, but especially so following all of the awesome casting news. And now the first teaser trailer is here!
You catch the voices of Ewan McGregor as Lumiere and Ian McKellen as Cogsworth and then the briefest of glimpses of Emma Watson as Belle. Much excite! All of the casting is spot on.
I don’t know about you but I can just see McGregor as sultry Lumiere and McKellen as stuffy Cogsworth.
And gorgeous, smart, wonderful, everyone loves Hermione-come-to-life Watson as Belle? So perfect.
Let’s talk about Beast and Dan Stevens and the fact that he is literally the human incarnation of the Prince.
Oh Luke Evans is Gaston and Josh Gad is Le Fou? I honestly wouldn’t have thought of these two but when they were announced it was just like, “Of course!” It’s like Disney knows us better than we know us, and in the era of datamining that might just be true.
Anything with Luke Evans is awesome really because Luke Evans shouldn’t even be allowed to be that handsome it’s just downright criminal.
The one casting decision that makes me scratch my head a bit is Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts. Mrs. Potts is a lovely, elderly lady with gray hair and a matriarchal sort of plumpness. Emma Thompson is not that, at all.
While I know she will play Mrs. Potts fantastically, I mean have you seen her as Trelawney or Nanny McPhee or in Barney Thomson? I just find it a little ridiculous that a man that’s nearly an octogenarian is cast to play a middle-aged character1 but a middle-aged woman is cast as a senior citizen. I will still see this movie and I’m sure love Thompson in her role, but I do think the fact that men can play any role at any age but women get typecast after certain age is the sort of thing we need to talk about.
