I will unashamedly admit that I judge books by their cover. While I won’t disregard a book just because it has an ugly cover1 I will most definitely read a book just because the cover is pretty. I bought several new books for my Kindle yesterday and I will fully admit every single one was picked simply because the cover intrigued me.

Ornate Book Covers

All of these covers were ornate in a fresh, fun kind of way. I’ve seen Wink Poppy Midnight on a few review blogs so as soon as I saw the cover on the Kindle store I knew I was going to buy it. I honestly didn’t even read the summaries for Vengeance Road and The Midnight War of Mateo Martinez but look how gorgeous that cover art is? They must be fantastic. Jane Steele I was immediately drawn to because I love weird mashups and weapons in a lace pattern certainly fits that bill, but also the main character is described as “Jane Eyre as a gutsy, heroic serial killer” so who could possibly resist it?

Dazzling Book Covers

I am very much a magpie in human form but whatever magpies are super gorgeous2 and what’s so wrong about liking sparkly, pretty stuff? Nothing, that’s what. These covers I was definitely drawn to because of the pretty, glittery like covers. I’m definitely going to be buying Seven Brief Lessons in Physics in hardback for my shelf because I definitely need more gold foil in my life. Starflight is a must read not just because it has a super cool looking cover and it has the same name as one of the first RPGs I played on my family’s old Commodore 64 , but it also already has a sequel and that’s pretty awesome.

Have you ever read a book just because you liked the cover?

  1. Okay, maybe if the cover is really atrocious.

  2. Hello fantastic use of contrast with pops of iridescence!

  • I pretty much only base my book choices on whether or not the cover is pretty, haha! And those glittery, sparkly covers… I’d definitely be a sucker for those too!

    • I can’t blame you, there are so many books with pretty covers these days.

  • Book covers totally pull me in! Though I always double check with GoodReads to make sure I’m not wasting my time on a story I won’t like anyway, haha! Love these covers you picked! Hope the stories are all awesome!

    • I usually do check with Goodreads but this time I decided to just take the plunge. So far I’m happy with the books I got but I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it again!

I definitely pick up books based on the cover, but if the blurb doesn’t interest me then I’ll put it back. It absolutely makes me check them out though!

    • I do this in brick-and-mortar stores like Barnes and Noble.

  • I buy books based on their covers all the time! These are so pretty :)

I don’t know if I have read a book just based on their cover, but I have passed on ones with bad covers a lot! These are all gorgeous covers though so they are really tempting me!

    • Oh yeah, a bad cover can definitely turn me away.

Honestly? I don’t think I even pay attention to the cover…maybe the book’s spine and how it looks on the shelf at the library. I spy a couple of books that I’m going to have to read, thankfully I’m no where near my goal for this year. :D

    • A spine will definitely pull me in, especially at the library. I’m more drawn to covers when shopping online or at book stores where they display books with their cover out.

Oh I totally judge by covers! Some are just so terrible. How can I get into the book cover design business?!

    • Right?! I so want to design covers. I think it would be a lot of fun, but also a nice challenge.
